PLEASE NOTE: This role may start remotely but the expectation will be that they are 100% ON SITE once offices safely re-open. For this reason we are looking for candidates in close proximity to the NSU office. Candidates in the Norfolk/Va Beach/Hampton Roads area are strongly preferred. Proof of their local address may be requested.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) manages the administrative and academic information technology resources for Norfolk State University. OIT provides ubiquitous access to technology over a highly secured wired and wireless network, utilizing a multi-gigabit fiber optic backbone for voice, video, data, and security. The office invites applicants for the position of Web Applications Engineer.

The Office of Information Technology at Norfolk State University has an opening for a Web Applications Engineer. This is a developer centric role that will actively work to implement and maintain the University’s main CMS (www.nsu.edu), and a number of other internal website platforms (Mixture of Windows IIS and Linux Apache/Nginx. The Web Applications Engineer will work with a team of developers, engineers and systems administrators to design and build enhancements to University sites and services.

The Engineer will also independently evaluate, select and apply software design principles, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Support business disaster recovery procedures for assigned areas of responsibility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Delivering high-quality applications
• Integrating with front-end developers and system administrators
• Designing systems for a required level of performance
• Designing systems with consideration to security needs and accessibility requirements.
• Writing test-backed server-side code
• Analyzing requirements and designing new functionality
• Supporting and fixing existing functionality
• Selecting and using the most appropriate and efficient technologies for a particular application
• Designing and building application layers
• Operationally Assess systems under job responsibilities and derive improvement plans

Minimum Qualifications

1. Proficient knowledge of web technologies and programming languages including, HTML, JavaScript, C#, .Net, PHP.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of MVC software design patterns.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of web security design principals.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of web accessibility requirements.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of database models, data integrity and platforms (MSSQL, MySQL/mariadb)
6. Experience with content management systems (CMS)
7. Familiarity with webserver platforms (Windows IIS or Linux based Apache, Tomcat, Nginx)
8. Experience with version control systems (CVS, git, mercurial).
9. Familiarity or working knowledge of CSS (Bootstrap) and / or JQuery
10. Familiarity with SSL Certificates and applying same to systems for secure communication.
11. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and work both independently and as a team member.
12. Demonstrated ability to generate and adapt equipment and technology to serve user requirements.
13. Ability to perform site surveys and identify requirements necessary for system definition and utilization.
14. Ability to perform research, analyze results, draft requirements, and formulate technology solutions.
15. Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical matters, both verbally and in writing, to end users who have varied levels of understanding of subject matters.
16. Experience performing software upgrades to existing systems.
17. Experience providing technical assistance to developers and other IT personnel to facilitate utilization/maintenance of new and existing systems.
18. High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with working on Windows based CMS products (Kentico etc.)
2. Experience in the coordination and delivery of computing services and technology in an academic environment.
3. Experience with git as a version control system.
4. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or discipline related to the knowledge skills and abilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience that meets the minimum qualifications, as outlined.
