The City of New Bern needs an expert level Red Hat Enterprise Linux system admin on an as-needed basis to maintaining their Linux environment. Work to be performed remotely but some onsite work may be needed once social distancing law allow.

***Day to day support is not required. The contractor will be utilized as requirements materialize throughout the engagement period. There are a total of 140 hours approved for the year on this engagement. The candidate will be contacted if/when they need assistance.

***Candidates will be required to do additional background checks and a fingerprint check since some of the work will be with the police department.

It is anticipated that the majority of services will be delivered via remote access. However, anytime the required support cannot be delivered remotely they will be required to go in person once social distancing laws allow for employees to return onsite.

****A one day on-site system orientation which it typically conducted onsite may be conducted via a web conference if social distancing requirements are still in place once we’ve made a selection.

The City will make every effort to schedule support sessions in advance, but there may be instances in which emergent issues force us to request support with little or no advance notice.

Requirement

Our requirement is for an expert level Red Hat Enterprise Linux system administrator with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience. Preferably, a significant amount of this experience will be with Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 5.10, 6.7, and 7.

The required services could potentially include any system administration task, but the anticipated most common needs will be as follows. These tasks are not listed in any particular order.

– Installation of operating system security patches
– User account management
– Installation/configuration of backup agent software
– Log review & analysis
– Troubleshooting/resolving operating system malfunctions and performance issues
– File and directory permissions management
– Scheduling cron jobs
– Shell scripting
– Expansion of disk volume sizes
– Working with Oracle DBA personnel to resolve problems that overlap the operating system and database environments
– Restoration of servers from backups, including a complete rebuild of the Red Hat and Oracle environment if necessary.

Though not required, some experience with Oracle and Oracle Application Server will be considered a plus.

Technical Environment

The Linux servers for which this support will be provided host the City’s Oracle-based financial, human resources, payroll, and utility billing systems. They are scheduled to be replaced by a new ERP system over the next two years. No major upgrades of their operating systems or Oracle are planned during that time, and only security patches which are absolutely necessary will be installed.

The servers are virtual machines, hosted on VMWare.

The City will maintain Red Had Enterprise Linux subscriptions for these servers. We will also maintain Extended Lifecycle support for the two RHEL 5.10 servers.
